Engineering Experiential Learning
HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE
Engineering majors work on real projects with real partners for real impact. Freshmen have worked with InSinkErator to explore the benefits of fixed magnet motor architectures versus single-phase induction motors. Sophomores have worked with Expert Engineering Systems to replicate and understand the cause of in-field design failures noted with three tier carts such that these failures can be mitigated. Seniors have worked with Form Machining to design new fixtures for select machining operations.
Space Sciences and NASA Research
The space sciences program at Carthage is a nationally recognized undergraduate program that provides students hands-on opportunities in technology development and atmospheric sciences through partnerships with NASA and academic researchers around the world. Participating students regularly travel to and work with researchers at NASA Kennedy Space Center, Johnson Space Center, and Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.
Engineering Co-op
The Engineering Cooperative Learning Experience is a one-year, paid cooperative (co-op) learning experience. Students who select to complete a co-op learning experience will be on a five-year program of study with one academic year away from campus working full time in a paid engineering position on-site with an external project partner (e.g., industry, non-profit, community organization). Students leave for co-op during their junior year following completion of Engineering Practice I and II, and are on co-op for two consecutive semesters. During each co-op semester, students enroll in the two-credit Engineering Cooperative Experience and maintain full-time student status.
Undergraduate Research
Through undergraduate research opportunities, we encourage our students to deep dive into real projects with real stakeholders. Each professor in the Department has a unique research focus, with funded research through local companies, foundations, and federal agencies. We invite Carthage students who are passionate about a topic and eager to collaborate to reach out to learn more. Research opportunities are available both during the academic year and over the summer, allowing students to gain valuable experience and contribute to meaningful projects.
SUMMER UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
The Summer Undergraduate Research Experience, or SURE, offers Carthage students the opportunity to work one-on-one with a professor during the summer doing research work. SURE is a unique opportunity designed to foster community among students. In addition to research, students engage in professional development, receive a stipend, room and board on campus, and a small research budget.
J-TERM
January Term, or J-Term, is a month-long period of study in January in which all academic departments offer innovative courses on campus, as well as study tours in other countries. While many students use J-Term to fill an academic requirement, others gain valuable global experience by traveling abroad.
